Choosing and Applying the Right Lipstick for You

Choosing Your Lipstick Color:

  1. Analyze teeth color. If you have pearly white teeth, you have a broader choice for colors. If your teeth are yellowish, choose colors in the pink and brown shades. Coral and orange families will only enhance the yellow cast.
  2. Do not veer away from you natural lip colors. Select a tint that is within 2 shades away, lighter or darker, that your natural lip color. Blue under-toned lipsticks are best for fairer and lighter skin. On the other hand, red and orange bases are better. If possible, check it under natural light to see how it really looks with your natural complexion.
  3. Choose the lipstick color depending on the event and time of the day. If it is just a regular day with a fair weather, wear nude or pink shades. You can use more bold colors during the night. Keep lighter colors for daytime and darker and bolder colors for night time.
  4. Choose sheer lipsticks and glosses that compliment the natural color of your skin. Matte and cream finishes give out a subtler daytime look, while a high-gloss finish adds glamour and best for an evening look. A sheer, natural-looking color with a little shine also looks well for day.

Applying your Lipstick and Lip Liner:

  1. Choose the lipstick and finish that will suit the occasion. Matte lipsticks give out a muted finish complimentary finish that is ideal for every day use. Satin and glossy finishes are more appealing for evening events. You must also consider the color of your dress in choosing the color.
  2. Apply all other makeup and do your lips last. Lipstick should be the finishing touches to a makeup.
  3. Before applying your lipstick, dab a very minute amount of petroleum jelly or lip balm to moisturize your lips a little.
  4. Draw a thin line along the edge of your lips using a lip liner. The shade of your lip liner should be one shade darker than your lipstick but in the same color family. Start at the center of the upper lip and draw outward. If your lips are too thin, you may draw on the very outer edges of your lips to make them look fuller. If your lips are too full, line within the edges to downplay the size of your lips.
  5. Apply lipstick using a small but firm lipstick brush. Coat the lips evenly working from the center outwards. Make sure that you do not go beyond the line you made with the lip liner.
  6. Blot your lips to remove any excess color and to even out the texture.
  7. You may use a gloss or sheer if you want to give it a glossier effect.
  8. Make sure that you retouch your lipstick after you eat or drink.
